San Juan Symphony Provides March 17 Update
Dear members of the San Juan Symphony community,
We are continually monitoring the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the United States. Given the indefinite postponement of our April 4 and 5 subscription concerts, we are now focused on this season’s remaining events, notably the San Juan Symphony Youth Orchestras concert scheduled for April 28 at the Community Concert Hall in Durango.
Since the facts are changing so quickly, the update here provided on March 17 will be the first in a weekly installment of public updates that will be provided by the Symphony. We want to make informed decisions and do our part to flatten the curve of COVID-19.
At present, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have advised that public gatherings of more than 50 people be postponed or canceled for the next 8 weeks, through May 15. When gatherings must occur, it is recommended that individuals keep a safe distance of 6 feet, which is obviously impractical for a group of musicians in rehearsal. The most at-risk populations have been identified as persons 60 years and older, which is an age that includes many of our Youth Orchestra families and audiences. Locally, public schools in New Mexico have been canceled for the next 3 weeks, while Fort Lewis College, the primary rehearsal venue for our Youth Orchestras, will not be allowing any classes or group meetings on campus until April 1 at the earliest, at which time there will be an update on the status of on-campus classes.
Given all the facts, and out of an overwhelming sense of responsibility to protect our musicians, students, patrons and staff from the potential of a wider spread of the virus, we regret to announce that the San Juan Symphony Youth Orchestras performance of April 28 has been postponed indefinitely. We will hope to reschedule the event for a future date, but we have no further information about that at this time.
As the San Juan Symphony is a non-profit institution relying on both ticket sales and contributions, we ask you to consider donating the cost of your unused season tickets. Single ticket refunds for the April concert are now being processed by the Community Concert Hall in Durango and Henderson Hall in Farmington. If you choose to make your unused season ticket a tax-deductible donation, you do not need to do anything at this time.
If you purchased season tickets, you also have these two other options which can be arranged by calling the symphony office at 970-382-9753:
– exchange your April tickets for credit on your account to a concert held at a later date;
– receive a full refund for the value of the April tickets.
