New San Juan Symphony music director Thomas Heuser officially begins his tenure with Fresh Faces and Firebird, the first concerts of Season 31: Resounding.  Performances are slated for Saturday, October 8 at 7:30 pm at the Community Concert Hall in Durango and Sunday, October 9 at 3 pm at Henderson Performance Hall in Farmington.  Single tickets and season tickets are available for both venues.  Durango season tickets are 50% off for first-time season ticket buyers.

The concert opens with Mozart’s flirtatious Figaro Overture. Savor the uplifting music of Clint Needham’s Spires and the sumptuous Romance of Antonín Dvořák, featuring the solo violin debut of San Juan Symphony concertmaster Brent Williams. Then after intermission, prepare to be mesmerized by the ritual dances and mysterious lullabies of Stravinsky’s epic Firebird Suite. The thrilling fanfare of the Finale will herald the start of an exciting new chapter in our regional symphony’s history.

Recognized for his stirring leadership and energetic programs, conductor Thomas Heuser has devoted himself to artistic excellence, music education, and community collaboration as a music director and public servant in the arts. Thomas was appointed the Music Director of the San Juan Symphony in 2016, and relocated to Durango with his wife, violinist Lauren Avery, and their son Theodore. Since 2011, he has served as the Music Director of the Idaho Falls Symphony, during which time he has attracted new audiences, reinvigorated the community, and helped the IFS gain a more firm financial footing than at any time in their 68-year history.

Brent Williams is Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at Fort Lewis College, faculty at the Music in the Mountains Conservatory and Concertmaster of the San Juan Symphony. Previously he served as Concertmaster of the Albany Symphony Orchestra (GA), Assistant Concertmaster of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra (FL), Assistant Concertmaster of Sinfonia Gulf Coast (FL), and Principal Second Violin of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra (GA). A dedicated chamber musician, Williams is the violinist of the Inverness Chamber Players and violinist/violist of enhakē (www.enhake.com).

Maestro Heuser will give a pre-concert talk on Wednesday, October 5 from 6 to 7 pm at the Rochester Hotel in Durango, and at 2 pm on Sunday, October 9 at Henderson Hall in Farmington before the afternoon symphony performance.  Both talks are free and the public is invited to attend.
